Just returned from a lovely 50th birthday party for Richard / Bella.

Attended by over 70 people, it was at the Museum Hill Cafe with an open bar, tons of desserts including a 3 layer birthday cake, loads of food, and a lot of FUN!

Learned a bit about Richard I didn't know before, AND met a lot of very nice people - great mix! I instigated singing "Happy Birthday".

Before that, Carol took me out to an early dinner at Mimis for my birthday - so nice of her.

And previous to that, I had a great morning here, interviewed Astra, and lovely drive to and from. Beautiful weather.

Loving life, enjoying myself, feeling happy and included.

comments

London Fog

"What is a London Fog drink and where did it originate?
London Fog is a hot drink with Earl Grey tea, milk, and a sweetener. It goes by more than a few names — Vancouver Fog, Vanilla Tea Misto, or just Earl Grey tea latte. It apparently originated in Vancouver and is a common drink in Washington and Oregon as well.
There are many variations on this drink, all with their own names: Calgary Fog that uses maple syrup, Dublin Fog replacing Earl Grey with irish breakfast tea, Maui Fog that uses coconut syrup, and many more variations that use different kinds of tea or syrup.
My version of London Fog is the usual Earl Grey tea with milk except I use almond milk to reduce carbs and calories and I avoid vanilla syrup by using a combination of vanilla extract and a low carb sweetener. The result is the same great taste, but healthier."
Earl Grey Tea: This is black tea flavored with bergamot oil, which is an essential oil produced by cold pressing the inside of a bergamot orange rind. You can buy this in supermarkets or online, and I don’t recommend substituting with another type of tea when making London Fog."

comments

Outside the Theater

So outside the theater, a woman who was sobbing, appeared cold, and seemed slightly developmentally disabled, was begging for money - "$40 for a room at the Motel 6 tonight". I walked past her, and when I got to the car, I had great concern for her, so I went back, and I offered to drive her to the Motel 6 and pay for her room for the night.

She refused. I went over this offer to her over and over - she was crying. I tried to get her to calm down, I told her I only wanted her to be safe. Finally after I made this offer to her over 7 or 8 times, I wished her well...

Then I went back and sought her out again on the street - I was in my car - I told her I wanted to make sure she was OK, I asked her to calm down and breath with me, I told her from my heart that I cared about her and not to give up - and repeated the offer multiple times. She said her husband was getting off work soon. And she "just needed $40) (I'd seen other people give her bills)

Finally I had to let it go and just write about it.

comments

Wow what a night! Stopped by the office to use the computer here.

Had a pedicure in the early evening, and headed down to park my car at the Kimo. Had some food at a cafe across the street, then walked over to the theatre in the coat Nancy gave me - I get so many compliments on it!

Spoke to some people around my seat - then the band came on - dynamite! When they invited women up on the stage to sign "I am Woman"! I was the first up - and I danced to some other songs too.

Very different show than the one at the Santa Fe opera - several special guests including EDNA VAZQUEZ who was outstanding amazing, got a standing ovation. I stood by her for "I am Woman" and she hugged me after the song.

AND went up and did a conga line to Brazil, their last song.

I had purchased the French songs CD, and I grabbed a set list as I left the stage, and I also got a copy of Edna's CD. I didnt realize they were doing a meet and greet and signing stuff.

Edna said "Thank you for supporting my Art" and I was speechless. OMG I would totally support Art. woo hoo

Really a wonderful energetic start to my birthday celebrations!

comments

Autobiography, Memoir

The Michael Nesmith memoir is wonderful - thinking about why I love reading memoirs and autobiographies - so see what people overcame, the mistakes they (admitted) they made, the lessons they learned and the successes they achieved... It's exciting to see what a human chooses to distill and reduce to writing, and what I can glean from it.

I'd say that in addition to Nesmith's book, Graham Nash's memoir, and Jorma Kakonen's are stand-out, as well as Carole King's.

I think about this quite a bit - sometimes someone references diary notes for their writing, other times, people might have taken tape recorded interviews, etc. as sources (for themselves). I suspect most celebrities, musicians, have a ghostwriter or an editor that heavily assists, or not.

And I always am looking for the over-arching story.

Michael Nesmith was an only child of a single mother. And she became a super wealthy business person (liquid paper) and died at 56.

Trail blazers, rebels, people with a lot to overcome, miracles and accidents. All part of life. Love the little slices presented to me on the page.

Haiku? (upcoming weekend) I'm too wordy.

I need to do a double-stack Haiku with creamy filling in the middle.

comments

Gratefully, the headache, feverishness, running nose, etc. is somewhat diminished this morning - I'm committed to knocking it OUT! Not a great idea for me to be in the office around people, and I can do a lot of my job on the phone and computer.
Here I am - been moving stuff this morning and tonight - I'm spending the night in the reading lair at Casita Karlita!

Tomorrow is New Year's Eve and I'll be in Albuquerque that night - through to activities on New Year's Day.

Sleeping on the floor on top of several glorious blankets - essentially made myself a pallet. I'll have my mattress and box spring moved up here - however not that bedroom set. May sell it.

When I came up here earlier, I ran a load of laundry and put it in the dryer - YIKES the dryer was still running when I arrived again at 7:15 PM - and the washer would not function - a lot of lights are not working either - I think it's a breaker. I tried them all in the electrical panel - no luck.

So grateful to have made a nest and chosen to hang out tonight...
This morning I went through many of my coats on racks at the office.

I had so many memories and lettings go.

A women's Swiss Army navy blue wool coat - never worn - a gift

The long tweed doublebreasted coat I wore on the Chunnel into Paris - I had a vintage rhinestone pin on it that somehow vanished...

A vintage leopard coat that never quite fit, and was a gift from a former partner

the Frost Brothers 1960s black cashmere coat (had a mink collar that I removed) that was my Grandmother's
and sitting in the living room when my parents brought it down to me as a surprise gift

brand new Pendleton men's bomber jacket I thought might fit me - it didn't

several other Pendleton coats - including a solid green one (too plain) and the long and short blue coats Susan and I wore last December, looking at wild horses...

and several other coats I still had tags on - too similar or not distinctive enough to keep - been schlepping them around for 25 years or so.

Then, on to my house, where I was loading up the car for tommorrow's consignment appointment in Santa Fe. As I was taking armloads out, my super delightful next door neighbor was out in her yard.

(For the noting of it - there was snow on the ground this morning - and it's bitter outside now.)

So I delighted and admired allll the gorgeous scarves I've assembled - breathtaking, stunning.

I went through everything - and sadly while there were several pieces that were destroyed by moths, there were some prizes that were untouched (and are now in the freezer!) and a few that could use a few small repairs yet I'm salvaging.

First I must say - I HAVE GREAT TASTE! WOW!!!!!

And I have soooo many gorgeous scarves! I must create outfits!

It's been an oddessy.

I am bringing the scarves up to the office to offer to several therapists.

Loving life, loving sharing, working through the feelings and grief.
My Sister's Drama

My sister's drama is really my drama too - because I was born in it and am on the periphery now, getting sucked back in with phone calls and with a future trip back home.

She emailed me on Monday, and told me that she had been in the ER on Sunday in a lot of pain, and was scheduled for a hysterectomy yesterday. She was pretty minimal in her information via email - just some basic factual stuff, and then a line about how she had to finally tell our Dad, and his immediate snarky comment about "you do have insurance, don't you?"

Of course, I offered to go to Houston for her, and of course she declined, she said her best friend Laura (from High School, who has a daughter named after my sister) was taking care of her.

Yesterday afternoon, I arranged for a nice bouquet of flowers to be delivered to my sister's hospital room, first thing this morning. Her surgery was at 5 PM last evening, and she would not have a room number until after the surgery, and the flower place would be closed then. I made certain it was a locally owned, old standard flower shop. I really dislike finding a place on the internet, and then calling and finding that it is a national chain.

So I got a call about 8:30 PM from Laura, telling me that my sister's surgery went OK, that she was in recovery.

Laura and I had a long ranting discussion about how difficult and mean my Dad has been in the past several days, and the day of surgery especially.

He is so self-centered and immature and just an insensitive ass. The night after my sister got out of the ER, he came over to her house, and told her that she was NOT ill, he demanded he make her a cup of tea, and then she began PROJECTILE VOMITING over the kitchen sink. He gave her a hard time and told her that she was doing that just to be dramatic, and WHO WAS GOING TO MAKE HIM DINNER?!?

HE CALLED HER DOCTOR to make certain that she truly WAS ill, and here she is, a 45 year old woman. However, she allows him to behave like this in their interpersonal relationship.

Then he began to whine that she needed a will, because how could he get to all her stuff in the house if she died?!?

This went on and on, according to Laura, and there is my sister, scared about the surgery, in pain, and not able to work.

(My sister had a tragic event about 2 1/2 years ago when her husband of 13 years chose to end his own life in a very violent way - of course our Dad's first response to this was an insensitive, "I told you not to marry him, didn't I?"

So the day my sister needs to go to the hospital for preliminary tests prior to surgery, the best friend offers, however our Dad INSISTS that he will drive my sister.

He does not show up at her house.

He claims he FORGOT.

My sister's best friend is on the other side of town with another friend who has had knee replacement surgery - yet she arranges to get over to help my sister.

Then, at the hospital for the surgery, no one can find our Dad. They look for him for about an hour before they realize that HE HAS LEFT. He did not stay around to find out the outcome or if there were any complications, and the doctors and nurses are all speaking to Laura as if she was next-of-kin.

At this point, to me, Laura IS family.

I'm so grateful to her.

Monday morning, a bouquet of flowers is being delivered to Laura.

And actually, secretly, I'm glad there is another sane witness to the craziness of this family drama.

comments

April 15th, from Roderick MacIver's Journal

I rarely arrive at an idea by consciously sitting down at a desk and trying to figure out what I want to do. Once I start thinking about a project, though, it doesn't leave my focus until I have come up with an idea.
I cannot force a design; I do not see this process as being under my conscious control. It is a process of percolation, with the form eventually finding its way to the surface. . . .
I do not think that we can fully understand how one makes a specific mark upon a page -- at some point one has to trust one's eye, one's intuition. I do not think that that implies a lack of rational thought. I just think that one cannot understand why one makes a specific move, that the creative act is a combination of conscious and subconscious thoughts that cannot or should not be deciphered.
My creative process balances analytic study, based very much on research, with, in the end, a purely intuited gesture. It is almost as if after months of thinking I shut that part of my brain down and allow the nonverbal side to react. It is this balance between the analytical and the intuitive, or between the left side and the right side of the brain, that is so much a part of these works.
-- Maya Lin, designer of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C., from her book Boundaries

Works of art that feed at least in part on intuition are more powerful than those that result from conscious thought alone. A serious artist should nurture his or her intuition.
I remember filmmaker David Lynch saying on the NPR radio program Fresh Air that when he becomes interested in a project, he likes to set it aside for a few months and let it percolate in his subconscious. If he remains excited about its possibilities months done the road, he begins work. But first, he lets his intuition protect his time and energy.

Intuition is nurtured in solitude. Its power is enhanced by rest. A meditation practice helps. I think prayer helps--the power of prayer is mysterious. A long daily walk helps. Meditating and then journaling, in particular asking my creative work questions as if it was a person, and recording the answers that come back, is a crucial part of the way I encourage and work with my intuition.

And part of nurturing intuition is remaining detached, maintaining a perspective that can only come from distance. If you hook into exciting ideas quickly, jump into exciting projects with both feet without giving them time to percolate in the back of your mind, your creative work will lack power that it would otherwise have. I know this from extensive personal experience. When I've been impulsive the results have been spotty -- determined more by chance, by the luck of the draw. Months of wasted effort sometimes resulted.

For the last ten years, clarity has been the focus of my life and I've found that what we need for that is right within us. When I take the time to tune into my body, I get immediate feedback about whether I am on the right track or on the wrong track.
I took a class about co-counseling, which is the way we learn to be counselors for each other. We learn to listen to and assist each other without the perception that there is something wrong that needs to be fixed. It teaches that we all have difficulties, but with a little bit of training and a lot of compassion and empathy, we can help each other. I wrote a two-page essay during this class called, "My Distress is My Ally and My Guide." I wrote about how, when you take a wrong step, you always feel it. A sense of unease overtakes you, or anger, or sadness. These feelings are never comfortable, but if you pay attention to them, they will provide immediate feedback about whether you are on your path.
If you let these feelings direct you--and I mean direct, not impel, because anger can impel you somewhere you don't want to go--if you let these feelings direct you, and you say, "I am feeling unease, therefore I must not be meeting this situation in the most beneficial way," you change your direction.
So read your own emotional body. People look for direction from the outside, but we get this constant direction from right within ourselves. Most of us don't recognize the things we feel upset about, unhappy about, as guidance. We see them as things that are happening to us rather than as direction we are getting from the universe--the feedback loop. When you have clarity, your life begins to flow with ease. The ease is the feedback saying, "Ah, yes. This is the path."
-- Andy Smyth, founder Wilderness Way, an organization that offers canoe trips into northern Canada.

comments
